Usmanu Danfodiyo University

Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS) is a public research institution located in the city of the caliphate in Sokoto State. It is one of the twelve universities founded in Nigeria by General Yakubu Gowon in 1975.

There are many blessings associated with UDUS. It is the alma mater of prominent Nigerians: two incumbent governors, INEC and EFCC chairmen, two current ruling ministers among others. It shelters different ethnic groups and different people with different beliefs. With no exaggeration, the university is among the distinguished awarding certificates both on learning and character.

However, despite all these blessings that my school are endowed with, it is unbelievable that the sachet water factory and bakery are nowhere to be found. Perhaps, the authorities are not aware of the fortunes the two factories will bring to UDUS community. Hence, I write this piece to tell the stakeholders why a water factory and a bakery is sacrosanct in the university environment.

Almost all the students suffer from malaria every year, and sometimes it is typhoid. Apart from incessant stinging from mosquitoes and the Sokoto hot weather, the kind of water we cosume also contributes, especially to the immune system that fights these diseases.

If water is said to be tasteless, odourless and colourless liquid, what is the definition one being sold in UDUS market? Obviously, with its sour taste, clay odour and yellowish colour, what we buy as pure water is certainly not really water. Sometimes, reserves from borehole is better.

I examined this conundrum and found out the root. As it turned out, the factories producing these sachet of waters are not in the school environment, not even university afiliated. The capitalist factory owners, whom profit is their primary concern, do not mind the health of the consumers. And students at the end bottom in the chain of production suffer the greed.
The university exists for students’ interest, and the need for our interest to be protected now cannot be overemphasized. UDUS needs to start producing its own sachet water.

Should we even talk about the inflated price of bread on campus lately? Or we should just assume that the same was also caused by the problem of inflation that hits food items nationwide? Well that is not much a concern. The question that begs for answer is whether or not these breads are safe to eat?

As a student and bread consumer, I have noticed my colleaques eat those breads because there’s no alternative. These breads contain more saccharine than necessary which is deterrent to our health. If the university management and students union really care for students, bakery is an important asset to have in the school.

In fact, sachet water factory and bakery can serve as a means for generating internal revenue. For instance, due to the hot weather and speedy dehydration, sachet water business cannot be more lucrative. Like this, we are not only saving the students, we are also pooling funds towards the university’s self dependent.
