UN-POLOC Congratulates Nigeria on Elections

As the world celebrates the World NGO today 27 February, 2023, the UN-POLAC while congratulating and celebrating with all world NGOs, similarly congratulates Nigeria and all Nigerians on successful conduct of Saturday 25th elections and calls for Peace.

Nigerians had turned out en-mass on Saturday in face of suffering, insecurity, moneyless and cashless terrible hardship in the country, to perform their civic duties by casting their votes for the presidential, senatorial and house of representative elections.

Thus, “Nigerians have been advised to remain calm and peaceful, shun any form of protests and violence in face of any form of provocations or tensions being created as the INEC compiles and announces this 2023 elections.”

Adesanya-Davies cautions and calls for patience, says “Everything will go well with the uploading at the BVAS ultimately at the end, as the INEC Chairman has promised, and the manually uploaded results would be revisited as ascertained with corrections.”

Professor Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies, the International Director/ Country President of the United Nations Positive Livelihoods Award Center (UN-POLAC), Nigeria, gave the advice while speaking at the commemoration of the World NGO Day in Port Harcourt.

We would recall that, “the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has promised a transparent and speedy conclusion of the process. The commission said it was aware of people’s anxiety, noting however that collation and announcement of the results would be done quickly.”

The INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said this during a media briefing at the National Collation Center in Abuja on Friday 24th. February, 2023. While answering a question as to when INEC would announce the winner of the elections, Yakubu said,

“We will ensure that it is done speedily but I can’t put a finger on the number of days or hours it would take. But it will be done speedily. We are aware of the anxiety and the need for us to conduct the process quickly, so it will be concluded on time.”

Adesanya-Davies also advised INEC to immediately resolve all the complaints of politicians, political parties, Nigerians and International observers by following due process as a matter of urgency.

She further proposes that there is no need for total cancellation of the election for sanity and sanctity of law and order. Technical and justified cases could be rectified on the server through non-manual uploaded verified results to the satisfaction of all, to ensure certainty of both due process and results as desired.

In addition, “The newly elected government should consider focusing on the major issues of security, youth empowerment, power and growing of economy as they hit the ground running.

Moreover, “The newly elected government should consider forming a Unity government by involving most political actors in the 2023 election, as earlier promised by Alhaji Atiku of People’s Democratic party (PDP) in the spirit of being a unifier.

Also, “The newly elected government should also bear in mind and re-visit the 2014 National Confab of  Former President Goodluck Jonathan (GEJ) towards True federalism and Regionalisation,” she added.

Furthermore, she proposed towards the next Election in in 2027 by the grace of God, “Nigeria needs to start electronic voting by VOTING through the use of ATM or PHONE rather than voting with VOTER’S CARD and use of BVAS and it should be reflected in a kind of a screen that’s accessible to all, immediately after casting the vote. That as well would also save us from the whooping budget of Billions of naira for heaven sake!”
