Armed bandits on Friday morning attacked a mosque in Yandoto community, Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State, killing at least five worshippers and abducting several others.

According to counter-insurgency platform Zagazola Makama, the gunmen stormed the mosque during prayers, opened fire on worshippers, and killed five people on the spot before taking an unspecified number of captives into the forest.

The killings sparked fear across the community, with residents later gathering for the funeral prayers of the victims.

A community elder, mourning the attack, said: “We pray Allah to forgive their shortcomings, accept them as martyrs, and bring an end to this bloodshed in our land.”

The incident comes less than a week after gunmen abducted 40 worshippers during dawn prayers at a mosque in Gidan Turbe village, also in Tsafe LGA. Witnesses of that attack said the gunmen arrived around 5:30 a.m., surrounded the mosque, and forced worshippers out at gunpoint before marching them into the nearby Gohori forest.

As at press time, neither state authorities nor security agencies had issued an official statement on Friday’s assault.
