1966 Coup, Counter-Coup, Biafran War And A Democratic Nigeria -By Isaiah Ogedegbe

While I must first commend Mr. President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for ensuring that we, Nigerians are safe and secure, there is need for more to be done especially in the North-East region of Nigeria, where kidnapping and banditry seem to be more frequent. There is a need for effective and uncompromised policing. There is a need for democratic continuity and restructuring.

Exactly 58 years ago today, precisely on 15 January 1966, a bloody military coup took place in Nigeria for the very first time and it led to the deaths of many notable Nigerians in several political positions in the country. It was such an excruciating experience for us as a nation.

But even today, the “Biafran issue” still poses a threat to national security. Nnamdi Kanu seems to have brought back memories of the dark past, who now languishes in the DSS facility at Abuja.
