The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused President Bola Tinubu of pursuing a plan to turn Nigeria into a one-party state, following the recent defections of the Enugu and Bayelsa State governors to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement issued Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC described the defections as a betrayal of the electorate and a dangerous signal for Nigeria’s democracy.

“The recent defections by the governors of Enugu and Bayelsa States to the ruling APC validate our long-standing warning that President Tinubu is determined to turn Nigeria into a one-party state, no matter the cost to democracy or national stability,” Abdullahi said.

The party said while the defections might appear to strengthen the APC, they actually represent “a loss for democracy” and a deliberate effort to weaken the opposition and consolidate unchecked power.

“These governors have abandoned their people to team up with a ruling party that has made life miserable for the majority,” the statement read.

The ADC accused the APC-led administration of failing in key areas such as security, economy, healthcare, anti-corruption, and foreign policy, arguing that Nigerians are “living through the APC’s failures every single day.”

“Food prices continue to rise, jobs are non-existent, and insecurity chokes every part of the country,” Abdullahi added.

The party also condemned the defected governors for what it called an act of “political apostasy,” accusing them of abandoning their role as opposition leaders who should have held the government accountable.

Despite the setbacks, the ADC said the defections had “further clarified the line between those genuinely fighting for Nigeria’s redemption and those seeking personal gain.”

“While the ruling party celebrates these defections, we are equally delighted that Nigerians can now clearly see who stands with them and who has joined the gravy train,” the statement continued.

Abdullahi concluded by saying the 2027 general elections would be a defining moment in the country’s democratic journey.

“2027 will not just be another election—it will be a clear battle between the Nigerian people and President Tinubu’s gang of governors,” he declared.
