ABUJA, 8 May 2019 — Abundant Nigeria Renewal Party has applauded the federal government on the return weeks ago of Zainab Aliyu and Ibrahim Abubakar from detention where they were facing a likely death sentence in Saudi Arabia for possession of illegal drugs. It was revealed that a drug cartel at the airport in Nigeria inserted the drugs in their luggage in the airplane check-in and boarding process.

ANRP has urged the federal government to go further to investigate this in order to bring all offenders in the cartel wherever they may be in and outside Nigeria to face the full weight of the law.

The Party also noted the possibility of innocent compatriots who have faced the death penalty for drug-related crimes they did not commit, and has called for a review of all such cases in at least the past decade.
The Party has also called for reforms and mechanisms to prevent further occurrence at our airports, which have become centres of corruption and illicit deals and where different shades of criminals go to daily ‘hustle’. This is against all norms of service delivery and ambience in a nation’s gateways. The general desperation of some Nigerians including officials whereby many see nothing wrong in putting others in trouble, or engaging in other serious crimes such as kidnapping or ritual killings should be of grave concern to the government and should signal a new approach to the delivery of promises to the citizenry.

ANRP believes it is the role of government to do all it can to ensure citizens are well guided and given opportunities for legitimate survival. The incidences of desperation like stuffing illicit drugs in people’s luggages only shows that Nigeria has become a ‘get-rich-or-die-trying’ nation and this is highly unfortunate. A values reorientation is desperately required.
