The Nigeria Police Force has explained why it cannot arrest crossdressers in Nigeria.

In an interview with Channels TV on Tuesday, police spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi stated that they cannot be detained since the case is extremely complicated.

He established that cross-dressing is not now a penal violation in Nigeria.

He further noted that, while there may be charges that those who cross-dress are also members of the LGBTQ community, there is no concrete evidence to back it up, thus they cannot take them to court.

“Some situations are always extremely tough to prove. I am not ruling out the possibility that we have a large number of them. Let us be reasonable: you cannot prosecute someone unless you have credible evidence against them. I haven’t read anywhere that crossdressing is illegal in Nigeria.

“Some of those who crossdress are accused of being into something else. That’s where the problem is. We need adequate proof, trustworthy evidence, to prove that they are truly interested in that. All of these offenses are natural offenses in Nigeria and are punishable under our laws.
