The President of the United States, Joe Biden, has made an unannounced visit to Ukraine amid the country’s war with Russia.

According to a release shared by the White House on Monday, the purpose of the president’s visit is to reaffirm America’s “unwavering and unflagging commitment to Ukraine’s democracy, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.”

As part of his itinerary, Biden will meet with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, in the country’s capital, Kyiv, where they will have “an extended discussion” on America’s support for Ukraine.

“I will announce another delivery of critical equipment, including artillery ammunition, anti-armour systems, and air surveillance radars to help protect the Ukrainian people from aerial bombardments.

“And I will share that later this week, we will announce additional sanctions against elites and companies that are trying to evade or backfill Russia’s war machine,” the statement said.

Biden also plans to visit Poland, Ukraine’s neighbouring country, where he will meet with the Polish President, Andrzej Duda, and other eastern allies to discuss how to further support the people of Ukraine.
