Security operatives on Monday opened fire to disperse protesters participating in the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow demonstration led by activist Omoyele Sowore in the Maitama area of Abuja.

The protesters, including Barr. Aloy Ejimakor and other supporters, had converged near the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) headquarters, chanting slogans such as “Free Nnamdi Kanu Now” to demand the release of the detained IPOB leader.

Witnesses said the group had cautioned the police not to use teargas against them moments before gunshots rang out, forcing the crowd to scatter for safety.
