Governor Mai Mala Buni has approved ₦7.9bn for the payment of gratuities to state and local government retirees in Yobe, ensuring prompt disbursement and ending years of backlog.
Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, has approved the release of ₦7.9 billion for the payment of outstanding gratuities owed to retirees across the state and local government levels.
According to the approval, ₦5.8 billion is earmarked for retired state public officers, while ₦2.1 billion is designated for retired local government employees, covering arrears from January 2020 to May 2025. The directives were issued to the Commissioner for Finance, Alhaji Mohammed Abatcha, and the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Ibrahim Jajere.
Governor Buni further instructed that gratuity payments be integrated into the state’s monthly financial schedule to ensure prompt and continuous disbursement alongside regular pension payments, thereby preventing future accumulation of arrears.
Speaking on the development, Commissioner Abatcha described the governor’s action as a reflection of his compassionate leadership and appreciation for the years of service rendered by retirees. He assured that the Ministry of Finance, working closely with the Office of the Head of Service, would ensure transparent and efficient disbursement of the approved funds.
Similarly, Commissioner Jajere commended the governor for his consistent commitment to workers’ welfare, noting that the move reaffirms the administration’s dedication to ensuring that retirees receive their entitlements without unnecessary delay.
Both commissioners hailed the initiative as a bold step toward fiscal accountability and a strong demonstration of the government’s resolve to prioritise the well-being of Yobe citizens, especially those who contributed significantly to the state’s development.
