Former Real Madrid and Everton winger Royston Drenthe has been hospitalised after suffering a stroke at the age of 38.
The news of the former Netherlands international’s health scare was confirmed on Friday by FC de Rebellen, an agency that represents retired footballers, including Drenthe.
In a statement, the agency said:
“Last Friday, Royston Drenthe suffered a stroke. Drenthe is currently receiving good care and is in good hands. The team and those involved hope for a speedy recovery.”
Drenthe began his professional career with Feyenoord before sealing a high-profile move to Real Madrid in 2007, where he went on to win the La Liga title in 2008.
He later joined Everton on loan for the 2011–12 season and also featured for Reading and Sheffield Wednesday during his career, as well as several clubs in the Netherlands and abroad.
Following the news, Everton extended their support to their former player, posting on X (formerly Twitter):

Drenthe, who retired from professional football in 2022, has remained active in media and entertainment projects since leaving the sport.
