Economic and commercial activities were brought to a standstill in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, on Monday as markets, banks, and offices remained closed in solidarity with the ongoing #FreeNnamdiKanu protest demanding the release of IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Although the Centenary City State Secretariat was officially open, most civil servants stayed away from work, citing fear of possible unrest.

Similarly, the Abakaliki International Market, Mechanics Village, and Spare Parts Market were open but largely deserted, with traders and customers avoiding the area.

Movement across the city was limited, as only a few commercial vehicles, motorcycles, and tricycles were seen operating. Many commuters resorted to trekking to their destinations amid widespread apprehension.

When contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Joshua Ukandu, said that the situation in Abakaliki and other parts of Ebonyi State remained calm.

“Abakaliki and other parts of the state are calm, and residents are going about their lawful businesses,” Ukandu stated.

He explained that the command had deployed officers and patrol teams across major roads to ensure peace and prevent any form of harassment or disturbance.

“The police are on the ground monitoring activities, and no disturbance or attack has been recorded so far,” he added.

Ukandu urged residents to remain calm and continue with their normal activities, assuring them of the police’s commitment to protecting lives and property throughout the protest period.
