#FreeNnamdiKanuNow: Tension in Abuja as Security Barricades Cause Gridlock, Residents Fume
Heavy security barricades in Abuja left residents stranded and angry ahead of the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest led by Omoyele Sowore. Commuters from Bwari, Kubwa, and Nyanya faced hours-long traffic jams.
Commuters and workers in Abuja were left stranded on Monday morning as heavy security barricades mounted at key entry points into the city caused massive traffic jams, sparking anger among residents.
Security agencies reportedly set up multiple checkpoints across the capital ahead of the planned #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest organized by activist Omoyele Sowore and other civil rights groups. The demonstration seeks the release of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, who remains in detention.
The gridlock affected commuters from Bwari, Ushafa, Dutse, Kubwa, and surrounding areas, leaving many unable to reach their workplaces or business destinations. Similar scenes were observed on the Nyanya-Mararaba road, where movement came to a standstill due to tight security checks.
A frustrated motorist, Usman Jibrin, who was stuck in traffic around the Sokale area, lamented:
“I’ve been in one spot for over an hour. If people want to go to the Villa, why should it affect those of us on the outskirts? Are they scared people will be imported this morning for the protest? This is punishment, and God is watching us all.”
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement explaining the extent of the security lockdown.
