Lagos Trade Fair Director Warns Traders Against Joining #FreeNnamdiKanu Protest
Lagos Trade Fair ED, Vera Ndanusa, has cautioned Igbo traders to avoid the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest, citing security risks, court orders, and potential business disruptions at the complex.
The Executive Director of the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex, Erelu Barr. Vera Ndanusa, has cautioned traders—particularly those of Igbo extraction who make up the majority of occupants at the complex—against participating in the Omoyele Sowore-led #FreeNnamdiKanu protests slated to begin nationwide on Monday, October 20, 2025.
In a statement personally signed on Sunday, Ndanusa warned that the protests could be hijacked by hoodlums, given the strategic and commercial importance of the complex, potentially leading to violence and heavy economic losses.
“We must remember the adverse economic impact of closing down the complex even for a single day,” she stated.
While acknowledging the citizens’ constitutional right to peaceful protest, the ED expressed concern that demonstrations often degenerate into chaos and vandalism, which could severely affect businesses within the complex.
The protests, championed by activist Omoyele Sowore, are aimed at pressing President Bola Tinubu to release Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who has been in detention since his rendition from Kenya in 2021.
Reacting to the growing mobilisation, Ndanusa cited warnings from both the United States Embassy in Abuja and a Federal High Court order obtained by the Nigerian Police, which restrains organisers from holding or participating in the planned demonstrations.
“The Management of the Complex wishes to bring to the attention of all occupants a planned protest scheduled for October 20th, 2025,” she said.
“We have been informed that the Federal Government, through the Nigerian Police, has obtained an Order of the Federal High Court in Abuja restraining the organisers from carrying out or participating in the protest.
“We cite this as a precautionary measure to emphasise that the protest should be stepped down at the complex,” Ndanusa added.
She urged all stakeholders within the Lagos Trade Fair Complex to exercise restraint, prioritise peace, and avoid any actions that could attract law enforcement sanctions or disrupt business operations.
