A female sweeper with the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has died after being struck by a commercial bus while on duty along Meran Road, inward Iyana Ekoro axis of Lagos.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Saturday by its General Manager, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki.

According to Bakare-Oki, preliminary security reports revealed that the fatal accident involved a blue Ford commercial bus loaded with bottled and canned beverages, which was “recklessly reversed on the expressway.”

“In the course of this grossly negligent manoeuvre, the vehicle forcefully rammed into the unsuspecting LAWMA sweeper who was carrying out routine roadside cleaning,” he said.

“The severe impact, particularly to the head region, proved instantly fatal.”

Bakare-Oki said LASTMA officers on traffic surveillance around the Meiran axis quickly responded after receiving a distress alert. He added that the driver fled the scene in an attempt to avoid responsibility but was chased, arrested, and returned to the crash location along with the vehicle.

“The apprehended driver and the implicated vehicle were subsequently handed over to security men from the Meiran Police Division for comprehensive investigation and prosecution in accordance with extant laws,” he stated.

He noted that the prompt action of security operatives prevented a breakdown of public order, as the suspect was nearly attacked by angry bystanders.

The LASTMA boss said the body of the deceased was evacuated by LAWMA officials for necessary procedures.

Expressing deep sorrow over the incident, Bakare-Oki described the death as tragic and preventable. He strongly condemned reversing on expressways, warning that it is a serious traffic offence and a clear violation of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018.

He further urged motorists to desist from reckless and unlawful driving habits, which he said continue to cause avoidable deaths and widespread grief.
