Maguire Urges Man United to Build Momentum After Historic Win at Liverpool
Harry Maguire calls on Manchester United to build consistency after scoring the winner in a 2-1 victory over Liverpool — their first Anfield triumph in nearly ten years.
Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has called on his teammates to build on their momentum after securing a long-awaited victory over Liverpool, giving manager Ruben Amorim his first back-to-back Premier League wins in charge.
Maguire was the hero at Anfield, scoring an 84th-minute header to seal a 2-1 triumph against the reigning champions — United’s first win at Liverpool in nearly a decade. The result lifted United to ninth place, just two points behind Bournemouth (3rd) and Liverpool (4th), marking a major turnaround from last season’s 15th-place finish.
Reflecting on the result, the former United captain said the team must use the win as a platform to build consistency.
“This club will probably get a few plaudits this week — resilience, fighting spirit,” Maguire said.
“But if we don’t perform next weekend against Brighton, it will be exactly the same the following week. So we need to build on it, we need to build momentum, we need to build positive performances — that’s the most important thing.”
Maguire emphasised that performances, not just results, will define their progress under Amorim.
“Performances breed results in the end. Take the positives, take the confidence, but at Old Trafford next week against Brighton, we have to make sure we perform and get the win.”
The 32-year-old England international, whose contract expires at the end of the season, admitted the victory carried personal significance after years of frustration at Anfield.
“I’ve been here seven years now and it’s been tough not getting that win — it’s been on my mind a little bit, to be honest,” Maguire said.
“I’m in my last year now, so this could be the last time I play at Anfield for this club. It was really important I came here and ticked that one off because it has been playing on my mind.”
