Nnamdi Kanu’s Continued Detention Despite Illness Is Inhuman — Ex-Governor Nwodo Tells FG
Former Enugu State Governor Okwesilieze Nwodo has urged the Federal Government to release IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu for medical treatment, describing his continued detention in DSS custody as unjust and inhumane.
Former Enugu State Governor and ex–National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, has urged the Federal Government to release the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, to allow him access to proper medical care outside the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
Speaking on Monday while reacting to the recent #FreeNnamdiKanu protest led by activist Omoyele Sowore, Nwodo commended the demonstration for once again drawing national and international attention to what he called the “injustice” of Kanu’s continued detention.
“I think Sowore has done well by bringing the case of the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu to national and international attention once again,” Nwodo said.
“Since it was declared that Nnamdi was ill, there have been voices across the country calling on the Federal Government to release him from DSS custody so he can seek medical attention in a national hospital.”
Nwodo criticized the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) for declaring Kanu fit to remain in custody, calling it a display of double standards.
“It was very disappointing that the NMA declared Kanu fit to continue trial and remain in DSS custody,” he said.
“Our President once flew to France for his health, and even our former President spent months in England on medical tourism. What is good for the goose is good for the gander. Kanu should be allowed to look after his health too. We try a living person, not a dead one.”
The former governor also accused the government of manufacturing new charges to prolong Kanu’s detention despite the lack of any conviction.
“He has not been found guilty in any of the cases he has faced. What we keep seeing is the Federal Government coming up with new forged charges just to keep him in custody. It is unfair. If a man has not been found guilty, he should be released,” Nwodo said.
Nwodo warned that allowing Kanu’s health to worsen while in custody would be “an unfortunate development,” insisting that justice, fairness, and humanity require his release to seek medical treatment before his trial continues.
