“North” Is Unlike Before I -By Omar Muaz

As far as one breathes, then he sees what he had never thought of espying. This life is filled up with uncertainties and disgusting fluxes. It’s a bit saddening that only the living ones experience this sh*t and I am one of.

This piece of mine doesn’t mean to hurt your feelings, but if it does; then I do apologize at once.

It irks me to come to realize that the ‘North we have today’ isn’t exactly the “Then North” our forefathers died for. We want to preside the future, huh? I think, Yes. But as far as we leave our eyebrow unshaved as it denies us the odds of seeing the dangers ahead, then we do not need a fortune-teller to know our future.

Northmen to me were the most courageous and patriotic people in this country, from 1900 to 2000 precisely.

As the world rotates, the good people vanish and likewise the beautiful era –uncorrupted years are no more –the ignorant society is enlarging. Consequently, the North has turned out to be a laughing stuff as we give birth to terrorism, banditry and occupied the highest percentage of the 13 million out-of-school children being bandied around as shown by the stat.

Although, social media users blast the Emir of Kano Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II (SLS II) on his comment on Almajiri system of Education… But on the other hand, I strongly agreed with him.

“…while criticising the almajiri system in the north, Sanusi said any man who is too poor to fend for himself should go out and beg himself rather than sending his children out for alms.” Punch Newspaper.

He said there’s no law that asks men to marry women, have children and abandon them without living up to their responsibility to them… He added by saying that fathers should be arrested for sending out their children to take alms.

I write to share this opinion with the Emir that the culture of marrying many wives and producing many children is responsible for poverty and backwardness in the north. And he’s right that the region will continue to be backward if we do not change our culture.

I started to be amazed at Sanusi Hamaseyo Pikin’s harsh words towards any parent who disowns his child to Almajiranci. Yes, as they always hide behind the Hadith of prophet (PBUH) which says: “Marry and procreate…” Isn’t it? “so that I will be proud of you in the day of resurrection”. Then one of the simple questions I will have to ask those parents include:
– After the birth, can we withdraw life support from the child in intensive care?

The answer to the above question will forever be NO.

To be continued…
