Obidient Movement Raises Alarm Over NURTW Leader’s Death Threat Ahead of 2027 Elections
The Obidient Movement urges Nigerians to stay vigilant after Lagos NURTW chairman Adekunle Mustapha allegedly threatened voters. Calls made for Tinubu, Sanwo-Olu, and security agencies to act before 2027 polls.
Supporters of Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, under the Obidient Movement, have called on Nigerians to remain vigilant ahead of the 2027 elections following an alleged death threat by the Lagos State Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Adekunle Mustapha, also known as Sego.
In a statement issued Friday in Abuja, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, said the threat — captured on video — must not be dismissed, citing the violent role allegedly played by some NURTW leaders during the 2023 elections.
Tanko reminded Nigerians of attacks on Labour Party supporters in Lagos during the last polls, warning that similar threats could fuel fresh violence if unchecked.
“The NURTW is supposed to be a registered trade union, but over the years it has become associated with political violence, extortion, and thuggery. Its use as a political tool for corrupt and failed politicians must come to an end,” he stated.
The group urged President Bola Tinubu, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and security agencies to take immediate action against politically motivated violence, including arresting and prosecuting those involved.
Tanko also appealed to the international community to hold Nigerian authorities accountable for ensuring the 2027 elections are free, fair, and credible.
He warned that if security agencies fail to act, citizens may resort to self-defense, which could destabilize the nation.
“The Obidient Movement urges Nigerians to remain calm but alert, and to report any threats or incidents to the authorities. For the avoidance of doubt, in accordance with the Constitution and Electoral laws, the 2027 elections must have zero tolerance for rigging, manipulation, or political violence,” Tanko added.
