The Ondo State Government has reassured residents of their safety following reports of an alleged plot by the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) to attack communities in the state.

This comes after a leaked Department of State Services (DSS) memo warned of a possible terrorist strike in parts of Ondo and Kogi states.

In a statement issued in Akure, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Idowu Ajanaku, said the government was fully aware of the security alert addressed to the 32 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army and was already working closely with relevant security agencies to forestall any threat.

According to Ajanaku, “The leaked memo is part of regular intelligence reports routinely shared among security agencies and the government. Such reports are a normal part of security operations, aimed at identifying and preventing potential threats.”

He explained that intelligence briefings often contain varying threat assessments, which are used by security forces to strengthen surveillance and coordinate proactive measures.

The leaked memo, signed by Hi Kana, Director of Security, DSS Ondo Command, had reportedly listed Eriti Akoko and Oyin Akoko in Akoko North-West Local Government Area, as well as Owo town in Owo Local Government Area, as possible targets.

The DSS memo claimed that ISWAP operatives had begun surveillance on “soft targets” in those areas and urged the military to intensify security operations to avert any attack.

In response, the Aiyedatiwa-led administration assured that “the government and relevant security agencies are already acting on the intelligence report, and necessary precautions are being taken to ensure the safety and security of lives and property.”

Ajanaku continued:

“We want to reassure you that every measure is being taken to prevent any attack in Ondo State. Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa is in constant contact with security agencies and has taken several steps to protect residents, especially those in border communities.”

He further appealed to residents to remain calm, law-abiding, and cooperative with security operatives.

“We urge everyone to go about their normal activities, report any suspicious movement to the nearest security agency, and refrain from spreading panic,” he added.

The state government emphasized its commitment to maintaining Ondo’s reputation as one of the safest states in Nigeria, pledging continuous collaboration with security agencies to prevent any breach of peace.
