Reflecting on Qur’an 55:13 in Light of Nigeria’s Current Hardships -By Abdullahi Adda’u Turawa
Another aspect of dealing with hardships is the importance of community support. Islam encourages believers to stand by one another during tough times, offering help, comfort, and solace. By coming together as a community, Nigerians can provide the necessary support to weather the storms of adversity.
In the midst of Nigeria’s ongoing hardships, one verse from the Qur’an continues to resonate with profound significance: “So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?” (Qur’an 55:13). These words serve as a poignant reminder of the blessings that often go unnoticed in challenging times. This verse encourages believers to reflect upon the multitude of divine favors bestowed upon them and, in doing so, find solace, gratitude, and resilience in the face of adversity.
Nigeria has faced numerous trials in recent years, including economic instability, security concerns, healthcare challenges, and political unrest. These hardships have affected individuals and communities across the country, testing their patience, faith, and perseverance. During these difficult times, it is natural for people to question why they are enduring such difficulties and to seek reassurance.
The Qur’an, as the holy book of Islam, provides invaluable guidance to Muslims facing adversity. In Qur’an 55:13, Allah poses a rhetorical question, asking which of His favors people would deny. This question is both a reminder of the countless blessings we often take for granted and an invitation to contemplate the reasons behind the trials we face.
To better understand the message of this verse, it is essential to reflect on the favors of the Lord that surround us daily. Even in times of hardship, we can find blessings that deserve recognition. These may include the gift of life, the presence of loved ones, access to sustenance, and the ability to worship freely. In the context of Nigeria, a nation endowed with cultural diversity and natural resources, these blessings are abundant.
Gratitude is a central theme in Islam, and it is especially relevant in difficult times. Expressing gratitude for the blessings we have can help alleviate the emotional burden of hardship. While it may be challenging to find positivity during adversity, acknowledging even the smallest favors of Allah can uplift our spirits and provide hope.
Beyond gratitude, Qur’an 55:13 also teaches believers the importance of faith and resilience. Adversity can be a test of one’s faith, but it can also be an opportunity for growth and strength. Through unwavering faith in Allah and a determination to persevere, individuals and communities can find the inner fortitude needed to overcome hardships.

Qur’an 55:13 serves as a profound reminder for all, especially in the face of Nigeria’s current hardships, to reflect on the favors of the Lord and express gratitude even amid adversity.
