Friends and unity

If you want to go fast go alone, but if you want to go far go together, at this point one needs to be able to distinguish between “fast”and “far”, but life is not by how far but how well, the well is what is referred to as how far you go in life, this is one of the power of unity, United we stand divided we fall. Now let’s talk about what Unity means, Unity is the state of being united or joined as a whole. The word United means, joined together politically, for a common purpose, or by common feelings. Only if we are United then we speak in one voice, then our voices would be heard. Unity begins from one self to the family, from the family to the neighbors, to the community, till the Nation becomes United. Achieving Unity is never a difficult thing, but there are factors that are affecting Unity, and if we do not come together we may go fast in life but find it difficult to go far. In subsequent paragraphs emphasis will be made on some of the Factors affecting Unity which are Ethnicity, Religion, and Race.

First off, Ethnicity, population subgroup (within a larger or dominant national or cultural group) with a common national or cultural tradition. We have heard cases of some parents not allowing their children get married to the person of their choice all because of the other partner is from another tribe that is different from their tribe, then how does that promotes unity ?. At the end they get married to the person they do not want and have extramarital affairs with the person they like. We have heard cases of ethnic conflicts which at the end will result to disunity among people within the country. the conflict between the southern Igbo and the northern Hausa in the Biafra War,Nigeria. The Nigerian Civil War (6 July 1967 – 15 January 1970), also known as the Nigerian–Biafran War or the Biafran War, was a civil war fought between Nigeria and the Republic of Biafra, even after the war they have not be this very close relationship between the Southern Igbo and the northern Hausa, because this war story has been passed from one generation to the other. If we fight and Stab ourselves all in the name of belonging to a different ethic group then how do we come together after killing each other’s families and love ones.

Martin Luther King, said and I quote “We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.” disunity in the 19s among the southern Igbo and the northern Hausa lead to war and the people perish. Not just that, tribalism has played a very big role in choosing leaders among the people. That the people do not consider competence anymore, they now look at who is from where they are from, before they vote.  This tribal bigots forget that if you would achieve a great Nation and if your voices maybe heard the people have to be United and forget about who and whom is from your tribe or speaks your language.

Moving on, Religion has been a very big factor promoting disunity, but yet no religion preach against disunity, but yet the people that practice this religion do not stops discriminating against other religion. Every one practicing a religion will say his or her religion is the best. So worshippers go extreme that they end up fighting the other person. There are things that promote peace and unity within the people. we have worshipers who do not eat food given to them by other religion worshipers during their festive period, what matter most is for us to understand one an other for peace to reign. But as a peace maker that I am, I feel when we share things among ourselves, it promote love and peace. But it’s fine if the other person reject our offer and for no reason we should not be angry, tolerance is one other way of promoting peace. I have friends who do not celebrate birthday, so when it’s my birthday they do not wish me a happy birthday, yet I still make friends with them, I know they love me, not wishing me a happy birthday does not mean they do not like me. It’s just their believe and their way of life so I have to respect it.

In conclusion, Race is another factor that affects Unity and this is very common all over the world. They are cases of people who were not employed not because they were not capable for a job but because of their Race (Skin Colour). And they are places they insist they are certain positions a person can get to all because of their skin Colour, forgetting that personality is much more important than just looking at skin Colour. To the extent that so police officers punish some persons more than the other person just because of their Colour. This mentality has been passed from one generation to the other, some children grew up see others like they are animals based on the orientation they were given by their parents. But We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools. Our religion, race, ethnic or language we speak does not matter, what matters most is unity and love. Let continue to preach love and say no to discrimination.
