U-17 Women’s World Cup: Canada Hammer Nigeria’s Flamingos 4–1 in Tournament Opener
Nigeria’s Flamingos suffered a 4–1 loss to Canada in their FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup opener. Queen Joseph scored Nigeria’s only goal as Canada dominated the second half.
Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, suffered a tough start to their FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup campaign, losing 4–1 to Canada in their opening match on Sunday.
Canada got off to a flying start when Gabriella Istocki found the back of the net in the 2nd minute. The Flamingos, however, showed resilience as Queen Joseph equalized in the 30th minute, sending both teams into halftime level at 1–1.
The second half turned one-sided in favour of the Canadians. Milisa Kekic restored Canada’s lead in the 73rd minute, before Julia Amireh sealed the win with two quick goals in the 80th and 86th minutes, capping off a dominant display.
With the loss, Nigeria will now aim to bounce back against France in their next group-stage fixture on Wednesday, a crucial game to revive their qualification hopes.
Meanwhile, Canada will face Samoa, and a win in that match would book their spot in the knockout round.
