When Obiano’s Governance Roll Is Called Up Yonder -By Chima Christian
Obiano has built an airport, a conference centre and other things in between. Perhaps, he has governed to the best of his ability. Whether he gave his best or not, Obiano should be encouraged to be at peace with himself.
As it stands now, the only thing standing between Anambra’s Gov. Willie Obiano and oblivion is “the mere movement of the calendar.”
Obiano has stared into this future. I believe he was scared by the things he saw. That, to my mind, largely explains the hurry to commission what his associates call his “legacy projects.”
By commissioning these projects, Obiano hopes to write his name in the proverbial sands of time. Our former governor (in view) is not alone. Kings, governors in our case, for most part of recorded history, have always grappled with the idea of immortality. They have since moved from seeking out elixirs that guarantee immortality to trying to immortalise themselves through “legacy projects.”
Obiano has built an airport, a conference centre and other things in between. Perhaps, he has governed to the best of his ability. Whether he gave his best or not, Obiano should be encouraged to be at peace with himself.
The hurried attempt to conclude the work of future historians is only a knee-jerk approach to this immortality conundrum; It won’t help much.
Obiano will undoubtedly get his one or two sentences in the history books when his governance “roll is called up yonder.” One thing is certain however; he won’t be remembered as much as he wants us to. That realisation, in itself, is bliss.
I wish him well.
