China and US tariff war

China has accused the United States of practicing “double standards” following President Donald Trump’s announcement of an additional 100 percent tariff on Chinese goods.

In a statement released online on Sunday, a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Commerce said:

“The relevant US statement is a typical example of ‘double standards’.”

President Trump announced on Friday that the new tariffs — set to take effect on November 1 — were a response to what he described as China’s “extraordinarily aggressive” export restrictions on rare-earth minerals, which are critical to high-tech industries.

Trump also warned that he might cancel a planned meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping later this month amid rising trade tensions.

Beijing, however, accused Washington of escalating economic hostilities since September, saying the latest move would only damage the fragile dialogue between both sides.

“These actions have severely harmed China’s interests and seriously undermined the atmosphere of economic and trade talks between the two sides,” the ministry said.
“Threatening high tariffs at every turn is not the right approach to engaging with China.”
