FRSC Mourns Five Officers Killed by Reckless Motorists in September, Orders Prosecution of Offenders
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says five officers were killed by reckless motorists in September across Ekiti, Ogun, Taraba, Jos, and Obollo Afor. Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed directed immediate prosecution, warning offenders will face the full weight of the law.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed the death of five of its operatives in September after being knocked down by reckless motorists while on duty.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, the Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, directed the immediate prosecution of the motorists responsible for the incidents.
Mohammed said the action was necessary to ensure justice and to serve as a deterrent to others who undermine road safety and endanger the lives of enforcement officers.
The Corps Marshal noted that the tragic incidents occurred across different formations: the Ekiti Sector Command on September 6, the Ogun Sector Command on September 8, the Taraba Sector Command on September 15, the Jos By-Pass Unit Command on September 19, and the Obollo Afor Unit Command on September 24.
“Their deaths are not mere statistics. They represent human lives — dedicated fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, and breadwinners — cut short in the line of duty while safeguarding Nigerian roads,” he said.
Mohammed expressed concern over the growing risks faced by FRSC operatives, explaining that beyond speeding and reckless driving, personnel were increasingly subjected to kidnapping, violent attacks, and targeted assaults.
He stressed that the Corps would no longer tolerate acts of recklessness that endangered its officers, warning that offenders would face the full weight of the law.
The Corps Marshal also urged FRSC personnel nationwide to maintain a higher level of alertness and prioritize their own safety while carrying out their duties. “They need to be safe and alive to save others,” he said.
According to him, the Corps is intensifying engagements with relevant authorities to strengthen the protection of its officers and facilities. “This measure is not intended for aggression but as a safeguard to deter assaults and ensure that officers can perform their duties without fear of attack,” he explained.
On behalf of the management and staff, Mohammed commiserated with the families of the fallen officers and hailed their courage and sacrifice.
He further called on Nigerians to honour the memory of the deceased operatives by obeying traffic laws, respecting FRSC personnel, and supporting efforts to reduce avoidable road deaths.
“Disregard for traffic laws and the safety of FRSC personnel will attract serious sanctions and legal consequences going forward,” he warned.
