Godwin Emefiele’s ‘rankadede’ economics paid off handsomely -By Chima Christian

One day Nigerians might wake up to find that their Chief of Army Staff and the Chief Justice of Nigeria are also running for political office and pretending that partisanship does not affect expected professionalism.

His policy miscue combined uncomfortably with President Buhari’s terrible mismanagement of Nigeria’s economy to put a lot of Nigerian businesses six feet under.

By sheer mastery of the rules of the game called Nigeria, Emefiele, despite helping to wipe off millions of jobs, kept the only job that is important to him – his own.

Rankadede so worked for Emefiele that he became the first governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to be reappointed since Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999.

Emboldened by his success, Emefiele, despite leading an organization as sensitive as the CBN, has fixed his attention on becoming Nigeria’s next President.

Nothing wrong with Emefiele’s ambition. It is however sad that he is pushing for it whilst also retaining his seat as the Governor of CBN. There is no way one can be running for a public office and be consulting with party stakeholders about his ambition without being partisan.

The institution called CBN is so critical that it was designed to be independent and above partisan influences.

Emefiele has not resigned, and may not resign, to pursue partisan interests. He has a formula that allows his ambition to be subsidised by taxpayers’ money.

Buhari’s Nigeria has not only become a banana republic, some argue that they have eaten both the banana and the republic!
