MURIC Accuses CAN of Betraying Tinubu Over Trump’s ‘Christian Genocide’ Claim
MURIC accuses CAN of betraying President Tinubu after Donald Trump reclassified Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern,” alleging false reports of Christian genocide were sent to U.S. officials.
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has accused the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) of betraying President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, despite what it described as his administration’s fairness and generosity toward Christians in key federal appointments.
The accusation follows former U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to place Nigeria back on the list of “Countries of Particular Concern” (CPC) over alleged persecution of Christians.
In a statement issued by Professor Ishaq Akintola, MURIC’s Founder and Executive Director, the group condemned what it called “misleading reports” sent to the U.S. about religious killings in Nigeria.
“Despite vehement denial of Christian genocide by the Nigerian government, U.S. President Donald Trump yesterday redesignated Nigeria as a country of particular concern,” Akintola said.
MURIC described the move as unjustified and based on a distorted picture of events in Nigeria.
“This redesignation is blurred, misplaced and distorted. It is a complete misrepresentation of the true picture on ground in Nigeria,” the statement read.
The group alleged that certain Christian leaders contributed to Nigeria’s negative portrayal abroad by writing petitions to the U.S. Congress claiming that only Christians were being targeted by terrorists.
“Instead of debunking this false and misleading narrative, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) simply amplified it,” Akintola added.
Expressing disappointment, MURIC said CAN should have acted more responsibly, especially given its influence across the nation.
The organisation further accused CAN of being ungrateful to President Tinubu, who it said had shown exceptional goodwill to Christians through appointments and privileges.
“CAN’s action is a stab in the back in view of President Tinubu’s preference of Christians in appointments, favours and privileges over and above his Muslim brethren,” the statement continued.
According to MURIC, President Tinubu himself stated that 62% of federal appointments went to Christians, while his wife, Senator Remi Tinubu, was described as being “more generous than Father Christmas” in her support for Christian communities.
“In spite of all that was done for Nigerian Christians by this administration, they still deemed it fit to take Nigeria to the enabler of Gaza genocide,” MURIC said.
Calling the situation “the Mother of all Betrayals,” the group said President Tinubu did not deserve such treatment and urged Nigerians to reject divisive narratives.
MURIC concluded that while U.S. foreign policy might influence the CPC decision, some Nigerians contributed to the outcome by supplying what it called “misleading information” to American authorities.
