The new leadership of the Non-Academic Staff Union of the University, Unical Chapter( NASU- UCB) has paid a courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor of the Institution, Prof. Florence Banku Obi suing for support from her administration on Staff welfare.

Speaking during the visit to the Vice Chancellor’s office, the newly-elected NASU-UCB Chairman, Comrade Victoria Orok said the new leadership of the union had come to familiarize with the Vice Chancellor, as well as, inform her of some challenges its members are currently facing which requires her kind intervention.

While enumerating the challenges bedevilling the union, the NASU chairman said the union needs a permanent secretariat for union activities.

She said most of her members are still being owed arrears of minimum wage/ consequential adjustment arrears paid to some University staff in 2022.

Comrade Victoria also decried the non-implementation and payment of accrued arrears of 2015/2020 promotion benefits, even as she drew the attention of the Vice Chancellor on the non-payment of overtime and shift duty allowances and release of 2022 promotion letters to deserving members of the union.

The Union Chairman also used the opportunity to commend Prof Obi on the giant strides achieved by her administration, especially in the areas of infrastructural development and establishment of new Departments and faculties.

She assured the Vice Chancellor that the current Branch leadership will continue to partner with the current administration to actualize the vision of moving the University forward.

In her response, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Florence Obi congratulated and commended the new leadership of NASU-UCB and her members, stating that, they are offering valuable services to the University.

Prof Obi said without the efforts of NASU members, the University environment would have been filthy, saying they have ensured that the University environment is serene and clean.

Hear her, ” Nasu is one union on campus that I must commend. Their members are very hardworking, they have been up and doing in ensuring that our environment is clean. They have contributed greatly to the development of our University.

“When you look at the national policy they talk about dignity in labour, they are the ones who have dignity,

“What we need to do is to encourage them to serve humanity and the University with all amount of dignity, commitment and passion”.

While urging them to be proud of their jobs, she said the current administration is not oblivious to the multifarious challenges confronting them, stressing that, those challenges would be addressed in no distant time.

She admonished the Chairman and its leadership to give its members re-orientation, educate and sensitise them on what unionism is all about, just as she described them as ‘partners in progress’.
