Nigeria’s Hollow Democracy by Chimamanda Adichie- is just a Sympathetic Appeal of Fallacy -By Collins Akinujomu
Under no circumstance should the USA or any other state or institutions outside the terrain of Nigeria be considered a decider for our institutions.
Having carefully digest the articulated expression of the renowned author Chimamanda Adichie in her said letter to Mr Joe Bidden, the American president titled;
“Nigeria’s Hollow Democracy; Why is America congratulating the winner of this disastrous election?” and I described it as nothing but a ‘Sympathetic Appeal of Fallacy’ for her candidate Peter Obi, it is her logical way (if you ask me) to legitimise the candidacy of Obi and bring his highly anticipated victory by the Obidients into global recognition, unfortunately this is democracy!
This is 21st century, you can not use your career antecedents and award glorifications to play on the intelligence of Nigerians
As a global celebrated figure, you can not claim to be advocating for the integrity of Nigerian election while projecting a candidate preferred, better and superior to another. She categorically described Peter Obi as “honest, different and accessible” and Bola Tinubu as “enthusiastic participant of compromise and drug baron” only God knows what her words for Atiku will be
Also, writing to the US president will not significantly makes the America a determinant of our institutions, democracy has been part and parcel of Nigerian political system right from the age long Pre-Colonial traditional political era, as seen in the democratic Old Oyo empire and the acephalous Igbo traditional political system, even if the America of today is claiming to be the custodian of democracy. Nigerian democracy should be allowed to grow!
The America that madam Chimamanda is running to is also faced with election irregularities, the 2020 USA election was accused of manipulation and rigging and this accusation is all over the places championed by the then sitting president, also former US president Donal Trump, a one time leader of the world’s ‘best established’ democracy has been arrested for money charges and arraigned.
Under no circumstance should the USA or any other state or institutions outside the terrain of Nigeria be considered a decider for our institutions.
It is high time we start believing in our institutions!
