Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has described his side’s 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Anfield as the “biggest win” of his tenure, while insisting that his players must show greater consistency to build on the result.

It was United’s first win at Anfield since 2016 and marked the first time they have recorded back-to-back Premier League victories under Amorim, who took charge nearly a year ago.

The Portuguese coach praised the fighting spirit of his players and highlighted the emotional lift for supporters following a difficult run of form.

“That was the biggest win in my time at Manchester United. It means a lot today but tomorrow it won’t mean a lot,” Amorim said.

United’s fans have endured a rough start to the season — including an early League Cup exit to fourth-tier Grimsby and a damaging league defeat to Brentford — but wins over Sunderland and now Liverpool have reignited hope. The Red Devils now sit ninth in the Premier League, just two points behind fourth-placed Liverpool.

“It was really important for our fans. They struggled against Grimsby, against Brentford, and today they saw a different team,” Amorim added. “To win in the stadium of the champions and our biggest rivals is really important.”

Despite the historic victory, Amorim admitted his side were far from perfect.

Bryan Mbeumo put United ahead inside 61 seconds, and Bruno Fernandes later struck the post before Cody Gakpo equalised for Liverpool in the 78th minute after hitting the woodwork three times earlier.

Just when a draw seemed likely, Harry Maguire emerged as the unlikely hero, heading in a Fernandes cross late on to seal all three points for United.

“It was a great win — not a very well-played game, but great spirit, and that’s all I can ask,” Amorim said.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot, meanwhile, lamented his team’s missed chances and poor set-piece defending as they slipped to a fourth consecutive defeat — their worst run since 2014.

“If you told me before the game that we’d create eight, nine or ten open chances, I’d have said that’s impossible. But from all those, we only scored once,” Slot said.
“It’s almost impossible to win a big game with a negative set-piece balance. We conceded another one today that cost us the match.”

The defeat leaves Liverpool four points behind league leaders Arsenal, while United look to continue their revival when they host Brighton at Old Trafford next weekend.
