Sanwo-Olu to Host Global Summit on Blue Economy and Climate Resilience in Lagos
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu will host the 2025 International Climate Change Summit in Lagos, focusing on the blue economy, coastal resilience, and green financing to drive sustainable growth across Africa.
The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, will host the 2025 International Climate Change Summit, with a focus on advancing discussions around the blue economy and coastal resilience.
The two-day summit is scheduled to take place from November 6 to 7, 2025, at the Lagos Continental Hotel, and will convene global leaders, investors, policymakers, and climate experts to explore innovative financing and sustainable development opportunities for Africa’s coastal regions.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, in Lagos.
According to the statement, the summit is themed:
“Blue Economy, Green Money: Financing Africa’s Coastal Resilience and Ocean Innovation.”
Wahab explained that the event would serve as a strategic platform to mobilize climate action and attract investments into Africa’s ocean and coastal economies, in preparation for the 2025 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 30).
“As Africa’s fastest-growing coastal city, Lagos stands at the frontline of both climate risk and innovation,” the statement read.
“Our goal is to unlock sustainable financing that protects our people, builds resilience, and drives economic growth through the blue economy.”
The commissioner noted that Lagos State has continued to lead subnational climate action through innovative city-level finance mechanisms such as blue bonds and nature-based coastal protection initiatives.
He added that the Lagos International Climate Change Summit 2025 will not only highlight ongoing and planned environmental projects but also position Lagos as a model for sustainable urban and ocean development.
“The summit is more than a conference; it is a declaration that African cities can finance their own future,” Wahab emphasized.
The 11th edition of the summit will also spotlight investment opportunities in ocean energy, sustainable fisheries, mangrove restoration, and coastal infrastructure, leveraging green and blended finance models.
Expected participants include representatives from the African Development Bank (AfDB), the World Bank, and Eko Atlantic, among other regional and international partners.
