I always feel for those who for the validation of outsiders hurt their culture and belief. Rahama Sadau’s penchant for doing things that negate her culture and religion has caused her more troubles than the fame she desired. No matter your success in life, where you come from still defines you. Communities jive in pride when a product of theirs brings them fame and equally go berserk when it is contrary. Part of civility is respecting where you come from.

You may convert from Christianity to Islam, for pete sake, you have no right whatsoever to denigrate your old religion. When you do that, you hurt the ego and feelings of those you once shared same identity with. When Nigerians excel abroad, we collectively celebrate them because they are foisting our identity in pride.

Those who join to insult the north for frowning at the manifestation of actress Sadau are exhibiting sheer intolerance for other people’s culture. Dressing to expose your body contour has nothing to do with the Islamic faith per se but a deeply more cultural thing. In the north, respect for a woman’s body is taken very premium. It is so jaded that even some Christians in part of the north use hijab and veil not in conformity with the Christian faith but in fulfilment of cultural creed!

If you are Yoruba and you find yourself in the north, and the best you can do is to denigrate your cherished Yoruba identity because you want to please the northern audience , you are nothing but an ‘Omo ale’. Where ever you go, remember where you come from, that is where Rahama Sadau keeps getting it wrong, her impetus to please her audience is making her go in defiance of her culture and faith- rather than upholding her identity, she is giving outsiders the guts to denigrate her culture and faith.
