If You Live Old Enough, You Will Die With A Disability -By Micheal A. Adeniyi

The simple truth is, “If we live old enough, we will die with a disability,” because most people lose a part of their functional body at old age, and that is even if they are lucky enough all their life. Sight impairment, ears impairment, and mobility functions are common disability for men beyond the age of 70.

As a Rights activist. I believe in the right to choices and the right to life. I also believe it is golden to live and let live and live and let leave or vice versa.

There are two types of disabilities. The visible and the invisible disability. What we see everyday is the visible one but there are lot of invisible disabilities too. That is a topic for another day. The world is moving toward inclusion and diversity but it seems we are still stuck in the world of “no mercy for the cripple,” as if they aren’t human who only lost a part of their ability/body function.

So why should I remind you that you will die with disabilities when you aren’t old and have prayed never to have a disability? Well, I am reminding you to join in the fight against bias and lack of inclusion and accessibility, even care institutions because if you believe you will have no disability and you are healthy and should not be concerned about disability rights, just remember you will grow old and disability will happen to you. So I want you to join me in pushing for an inclusive society, accessible transport, accessible banking, accessible place of worship, accessible building, and disability care institution.

We live in a country where we all think what people with disabilities need is money and some ableism comment to lift their spirits. Hell No! There is a need for disability rights, inclusion, and accessibility.
