The Mistake Of Southern Governors Forum On 2023 Presidency -By Shariff M.M Al-hassan

A critical analysis on all these political developments would suggest that there were great political power plays of a little to the left and a little to the right. Thus he who come to equity must come with clean hands.

Southern governors decision on VAT

The press release by the Northern Governors Forum that come 2023, the Presidency should not go to the Southern part is a reaction to the earlier stand of Southern Governors Forum that the Presidency must go to the South in 2023. This was a clear negative political practice demonstrated by the Southern Governors.

The actions of these Southern Governors made me to wonder as to where they draw this power of 2023 Presidency must be for the South. Could it being that, they relied on the principle of zoning which is a baby of one of the Political Parties which in a way is  completely out of tune with the ground norm. A principle which is unconstitutional as far as 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is concerned.

So also it is important that the Southern Governors should look back to the historical cum political evolution of Nigeria from 1999 to date, the facts are very clear. The North can be said to have been short charged as far as the Nigeria Presidency is concerned but for peace to reign North allowed those developments to happen.
On the 29th May 1999, former President Olushegu Obasanjo was sworn as the Nigerian President for eight years. In 2007 he was succeeded by late former President Musa Yar’adua who could not finish his eight years’ constitutional period. But the Vice-President Dr. Ebele Jonathan was by the doctrine of necessity spearheaded by a Northern Senate President made it possible for him to continue in office. This consolidated Southern position till he left finally on the 29th May 2015.

A critical analysis on all these political developments would suggest that there were great political power plays of a little to the left and a little to the right. Thus he who come to equity must come with clean hands.

Therefore it would look unmatured and wrong for the Southern Governors not to give due considerations to these power plays. Their tall talk could be the bases that triggered this reactions by their counterparts from the North.

My honest advice to the Southern Governors is that, let them go down on their kneels to sort out this from their counterparts from the North so that they can get what they want easily and cheaply. Their threat would not yield what they want but more political confusions. Political solution is the only answer.
